The “douaniers,” or border police, are the ones to be concerned about. They operate wherever they want in France. They do, however, have their own laws, and instead of jail time, they threaten you with a fine of 20 grams or less. The “gendarmes” and local police, unlike the douaniers, do not have the authority to search for no cause, but if you are unlucky, they may write you up or even detain you. Judges give you the choice of speaking with an addiction specialist, and 95% of the time they report that you are simply a regular person who uses marijuana, and that’s the end of it.

If you have a tiny amount, they will most likely take it from you. I’ve smoked hash in the streets all throughout the city, and no one seems to mind (as long as there not cops).

Where to get cannabis/weed in Marseilles

In the slums, to be precise. In Marseille, I’ve never had any issues with being robbed. In Frjus (a smaller city an hour and a half away), I was ripped off and threatened with an ass thrashing, but Marseille is set up for business. The companies do not want their clients to be looted, thus you are generally safe (the organizations usually have security and lookouts posted). Deals are generally made in stairwells (the people on the outside inform you which stairway to go to). There is generally a queue of people waiting, of all ages and socioeconomic groups; do not be scared to enter.

Go for the people from the Middle East, who are usually simply standing around and can provide you with some. If you don’t speak French, you can try in English.  Get your weed and have a nice time à la marseillais
